Maersk Maryland Trials at Greenock, UK 02/01/2011
During Maersk Maryland Trials (17/18 June 2010) several systems were pre-tested to identify their capabilities and shortcomings. In particular the test revealed for the following systems:

  • Air-2-Air helicopter. The main problem with the specific helicopter deployment was its susceptibility to light wind disturbances and low video quality; however still images were excellent. Also its communication hardware is incapable to operate within holds, even at limited distance, although it was unaffected while on the deck.
  • Magnet Crawler. The communication link test revealed much better performance due to its low frequency (35MHz), however severe traction problems on rusty surfaces were revealed.
  • Camera tests. All cameras tested performed reasonably well even at low light conditions.
  • Communications. Test revealed that special care and further equipment testing is needed since the bulk metal surfaces disrupt the link quality. All these trial results, were communicated and further testing is planned.
