HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

Syros' Shipbuilding and Industrial Enterprises S.A. is wholly owned by Neorion Holdings S.A. The yard was founded in 1861 and is the oldest yard in modern Greece and the largest remaining industry in the Aegean. Neorion constructed some of the first steel and steam boats in the 19th century.
One of the major contributors of Neorion were the Goulandris brothers who made a major investment effort in 1969. They expanded the installations and put the foundations of a modern yard. Through their efforts Neorion became the third largest shipyard in Greece. In the 80's the yard passed to government control until 1994 where it was bought and privatized again.

THE YARD

The Yard has a pier of 1,8 Kilometers and has cranes of 40, 25 and 20 tons. Additionally there is a 200 ton floating crane and 4 tug boats. There are two floating docks of 75.000 DWT and 40.000 DWT as well as the new Syncro Lift, which is one of the largest in the Eastern Mediterranean.

HUMAN RESOURCES

On average the yard has employed more than 600 people. Great importance has been given to the quality of their work so a Center of Continuous Training was formed (KEK) that has continually provided its services for that purpose.

INVESTMENTS

From 1994 to 2004 more than €21mil was invested in the company in new infrastructure and equipment. Another €14mil was spent in main finance. One of the most important investments was the creation of infrastructure that was aimed at the construction of mega yachts or small cruise ships. One of the largest Syncrolifts in the Eastern Med was installed capable of lifting ship 100meter long or 2.500DWT.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The yard has a policy to help every year organizations in the Island of Syros, that boost the level of social services in the island. More than €100th was donated to the local hospital for new equipment. Neorion also sponsored two Olympic sailing athletes, Antony Bougiouris and Dimitri Theodorakis.
During a decade that the company has been operating more than €75mil have stayed in the local economy directly from the yard, while additionally the company has created business for the local economy through the year.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Due to the fact that the yard is surrounded by the capital city in Syros, extreme care has been taken to protect the environment. The yard has ultra high pressure water jets, enclosed grit blasting and an enclosed area for grit blasting.
