Lloyd's Register is an independent risk management and safety assurance organisation. The Lloyd's Register Group provides services designed to help our clients achieve their business goals, while optimising safety and quality and preserving the environment. Through its constitution, Lloyd's Register is directed 'to secure, for the benefit of the community, high technical standards of design, manufacture, construction, maintenance, operation, and performance, for the purpose of enhancing the safety of life and property both at sea and on land'.
Lloyd's Register was founded in London in 1760 to examine merchant ships and 'classify' them according to their condition. Our expertise now covers the wider spectrum of shipping, railways, other land-based industries and oil and gas. We operate through over 200 offices worldwide, served by some 5,500 employees.
Marine business work involves classification, which sets standards of quality and reliability that must be maintained if a ship is to remain in 'class'. The rules for ship construction and maintenance are constantly revised and updated in line with developments in ship building and current research. Lloyd's Register also carries out statutory inspections in line with international conventions and codes for various national administrations.
Beyond classification and statutory activities, Lloyd's Register helps ship operators understand risks and reduce business losses through a number of services and the provision of quality advice.
